To many readers, this article may seem elementary at first, it may come off preachy, but the intention is two-fold. For one, it?s purpose is to encapsulate the seemingly complex relationship between profit and self-perception. To laser-point its sub-sections to a more graspable, focal manner. Two, for the bare-bones fact that there?s always new readers, which are drawing their focus passed a massive fog of pervasive propaganda. This article is for those who would otherwise have an ambivalent relationship with these websites whose articles impart daunting moral, and personal obligations. I?m using this opportunity to shed some light on the oft-unspoken understandings and shedding some personal light.

Between 1880 and 1930, the campaign to convince consumers of their inadequacy has been on it?s afterburners. The national market spread in size and scope, and urban living became a more predominant experience for the average working citizen. Marketing agencies and firms changed their sales methods to find a way capture the attention of the average newspaper reader. A shift from verbal to visual forms of expression slowly occurred, with a move from an informational sales pitch to a more to subtly convince them that their product can contribute to life in some relevant way. For it to contribute to some degree one must feel either inept, alienated, too short, too fat, too skinny, too eccentric, too smart, too dumb, too normal. Many of these agencies hired psychological consultants, therapists who can help them understand the faculties of the human mind. Ultimately, inadequacy may have become the most profitable concept invented in the 20th century, even more so than war. The singular idea of not feeling beautiful created new industries, genres, mediums.

Here are some statistics on self- perception and its relationship on suicide.

According to a March 15 article on the ScienceDaily medical news website, GSU assistant professor Inas Rashad has determined that adolescent girls who think they are too fat are at increased risk for committing suicide ? even if the girls are actually within the normal, healthy weight range for their age:

  • The researchers analyzed data that had been collected by the Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System over an eight-year period beginning in 1999.
  • The researchers found that the belief that they were overweight increased girls? probability of having suicidal thoughts by 5.6 percent, raised the probability of suicide attempts by 3.2 percent, and increased the likelihood that they would injure themselves during a suicide attempt by 0.6 percent.
  • The risk of suicide by adolescent females could potentially add about $280 to $350 million to the costs of adolescent obesity, which includes the direct cost of illnesses and associated health care and indirect costs such as productivity losses, reduced income, and premature mortality.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, from 2000 to 2005, there was a staggering 44 percent increase in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures among males.

Another interesting fact according to Forbes.com:

Banking, autos, publishing, retail, manufacturing?the recession has hammered them all. But there is one squishy sector that just keeps on growing: the self-help industry.

Americans spent $11 billion in 2008 on self-improvement books, CDs, seminars, coaching and stress-management programs?13.6% more than they did back in 2005, according to Marketdata Enterprises, an independent Tampa-based research firm that tracks everything from adoption agencies to funeral homes. Latest forecast: 6.2% annual growth through 2012.

A persons grasp on their society has become more elusive. It?s created a divulging path from true progress (collectively, or individually) to a feeding/serving relationship with its environment. The self- concept builds a machine that you are a part of, either as an accomplice or as a unit of energy. The characteristics of this machine and the cogs within which are those persons and collectives is a sadomasochistic merry-go-round even amongst the most ?progressive? colleagues.

The job market causing more and more people to feel inadequate and project unto themselves failures and ineptitude. Many people delve into self- destructive behavior like alcoholism, drug use, deep depression and ultimately suicide. None of which is answered with a pill despite the claims of many drug companies and some doctors.

ultimately, this branches out and is the lifeblood of such industries such as fashion (tens of thousands of suicides), surgical industry, pharmaceutical (millions of deaths a year- and we?re not talking about medical malpractice), gym industry, psychologists and therapist fields. To keep up with the Jone?s which cause credit card debt, housing bubbles, the War- On-Drugs business, alcoholism, prison industrial complex. All these seem so different and unrelated, but many more subjects can be attached, and its profitability relies in many ways in the deep sense within people of something missing. Those feeling, nurtured by these industries. Promoted and subtly bone rattling as if spoken through a blow horn. Projected by advertisements, movies, tv shows, various news media, and more powerfully echoed amongst friends and family members.

If you understand the means and the motive, then you understand what it is you should do to make yourself better prepared to deal with all the messages of suggestion that surround us. Suggestions can more readily? seep into the deepest cores of our consciousness. These values and principles have already effected and shaped our central characteristics. Coherently deconstruct and question that which more obviously an implant of ?profitable behavior?, which were beamed through our eyes and ears from our malleable youth.

PFT: Bears’ Marshall cleared in NY, lawyer says

Stocks-that-doubled-your-money-in-5-years-0891OE7-x-largeGetty Images

Several weeks ago, a variety of remarks emerged from influential NFL owners, like Pats owner Robert Kraft, regarding the future of the salary cap under the new CBA.? And it painted a not-so-pretty picture for players who are under the impression that it will continue to increase ? and that it will spike significantly when the new TV deals kick in.

The talk culminated in NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth vowing to ?crunch all the numbers.?? All the numbers apparently have been crunched.

The NFLPA has taken the message directly to the players via a two-page document entitled ?The Economic Truth About The New NFL CBA.?

The first page begins with an all-caps message that ?contrary to recent statements by some NFL owners, the claim that player salaries are flat or are going to remain flat under the CBA are wrong.?

Following that are four bullet points:

1. ?The amount of cash spent on players in salaries an benefits under the new CBA has gone up to nearly 55 percent of All Revenue in 2011. This is a higher percentage of All Revenue spent on players in cash than in any year under the 2006 CBA.?

2. ?Players were paid more than $160 million per team in cash and benefits in 2011, which is well above the $142.2 million in cap plus benefits in 2011, i.e., a lot of cash over cap.?

3. ?Equally significant, because of the increase in signing bonuses in rookie guarantees, the amount of player salaries guaranteed in 2011 increased from about 50% in 2010 to about 57% in 2011. This is the highest percentage of guaranteed compensation the NFL players have ever had.?

4. ?Equally significant, because of the increase in signing bonuses and rookie guarantees, the amount of player salaries guaranteed in 2011 increased from about 50% in 2010 to about 57% in 2011. This is the highest percentage of guaranteed compensation the NFL players have ever had.?

The second page contains two paragraphs: ?The reason for this large increase in cash spending on players is that the new CBA emphasizes and requires cash spending by teams, as opposed to just salary cap dollars. It also removes the mechanism in the old CBA to lower the salary cap when teams spend too much cash above the salary cap. The result is that the new CBA delivers a higher percentage of revenues to players in cash than the old CBA and salaries have gone up ? not remained flat ? under the new CBA.?

And: ?The 47% player share referred to by the owners and others is in cap dollars ? which is an accounting mechanism. In real cash dollars, which go into the players? pockets, the new CBA has so far provided a higher percentage of revenue, a greater percentage of guaranteed money, and more actual dollars, than in any year of the 2006 CBA.?

Here?s our objective assessment of the two-page document:

1.? Ultimately, there?s no difference between salary cap dollars and real dollars.? Every dollar paid to a player eventually hits the salary cap.? The fact that, collectively, the teams spent over the cap by more than 10 percent per club in 2011 means that, eventually, that excess will be reflected by decreased spending, since fewer cap dollars will be available as the cash-over-cap hits the cap.

2.? The two-page document says nothing about future cap growth.? And therefore it does nothing to refute the contention by multiple owners, like Robert Kraft, that the salary cap will grow only slowly over the next several years.

3.? The increased use of guaranteed salaries is significant, but in many cases the salaries being guaranteed are salaries that were going to be paid anyway.? For example, when a player receives an eight-figure signing bonus and fully-guaranteed first-year base salary, there?s no reason to guarantee the first-year salary because it?s going to be paid with or without a guarantee.? And for the first-rounders who now receive three or four years of fully-guaranteed compensation ? under a much more limited compensation formula ? the chances of any of those players being cut within the first three or four seasons already were slim, to say the least.

4.? The best news for players, which isn?t mentioned in the document, is that as of 2013 each team must spend in cash 89 percent of the unadjusted salary cap.? This means, of course, that there was and is no spending minimum per team in 2011 and 2012.

5.? The document also omits reference to or explanation of the union?s decision to agree to remove $46 million in total cap dollars from two teams that like to spend money (the Cowboys and Redskins) and redistribute it to teams that may or may not spend it.

Here?s the bottom line as to, well, the bottom line.? Both sides should feel good about getting a deal done that creates an atmosphere (at least financially) or a true partnership.? And the NFL should refrain from saying or doing anything to suggest that the deal isn?t as good as the players think it is.? The league should want the players to be happy with the deal, and the players should want the league to be happy with the deal.? That?s how a true partnership is supposed to work, and that attitude will help avoid having the NFL slip into lockout or strike status come 2021.

Why geeks should be invited to the policy party

Angela Saini, contributor

51LKB69wwZL._SL500_AA300_.jpgIn The Geek Manifesto, Mark Henderson pleads for citizens who value science to force it onto the mainstream political agenda and other main walks of life

THE UK House of Commons contains only one member of Parliament who has worked in scientific research. Starting with this statistic in The Geek Manifesto, Mark Henderson unleashes a depressing roll call of institutions and people who have let down science. Former science editor at UK daily The Times, Henderson doesn’t shy away from naming names, even rapping his own knuckles for a negative news story he once wrote about the Large Hadron Collider.

But this book is not simply about cataloguing bad science; it is a rallying cry. What the UK needs, he argues, is for those citizens who value science to rise up and force it onto the mainstream political agenda.

His use of the word “we” throughout leaves no doubt that he is appealing to fellow geeks. In a chapter on education, he urges us to take up science teaching in schools. In others, he presses his scientific comrades to critique government policy on crime and nuclear power. To anyone who regularly reads British newspapers, his case studies will sound familiar – the false link between the MMR vaccine and autism, for instance, or environmental concerns over GM crops. But the purpose of this book seems not so much to surprise, as to provide ammunition for those who think that society could use a good deal more of the scientific method.

Researchers who are wary of dirtying their hands with politics should be encouraged by recent successful campaigns on blogs and social networks, he says. In 2010, for example, more than 2000 people rallied in Westminster under the banner “Science is Vital”, protesting against proposed 30 per cent cuts to public spending on science. A subsequent petition gained more than 33,000 signatures. It seems to have worked: the UK science budget was frozen for the next four years.

Mobilising geeks into a voting bloc that achieves large-scale change, however, may be an uphill battle, especially when voters are already worried about funding of public services.

But even if we don’t see protesting crowds waving bright orange copies of his book before Parliament, it is impossible not to admire Henderson’s focused anger at the lack of science in policy-making and his passion to change things. If this inspires just one more scientist to enter politics, it will have done its job.

Work Out Routines For The Disabled Person

The benefits that could be derived from physical exercise are not limited to those who are able to walk. Even the disabled can benefit from work out routines to improve fitness, promote a positive attitude, enhance self-esteem and lessen stress.

However, before doing any work out routines, you should always consult your physician first, no matter what kind of disability you may have. This will ensure that you do not have any medical conditions that can be worsened by physical activity and none of your medications will compromise your ability to exercise. Consulting with a rehabilitation and physical medication specialist will also be helpful. He or she can guide you on the activities that will be most suited for your particular condition.

There is a sport or exercise for almost any person with disability these days. Even if you are not able to walk, you can participate in water sports or simply swim. May be you can exercise in a stationary bike. If this is not possible, you can do hand cycling, which is a great aerobic workout. A hand cycle allows you to use your arms in place of your legs to power the bicycle.

Any kind of exercise program should include strength training. Building your muscles will increase your strength and contribute to weight control since if you have more muscles, you can burn more calories. To build the strength of your upper body, you may exercise at home with tubing or exercise bands, go to the gym and work on fitness equipment or utilize free weights for your upper body. Since the right form is vital in strength workout routines, you should try to do one or two sessions with a physical therapist or personal trainer who has experience in working with disabled persons. In addition, work out routines would not be complete without stretching so always include it in your regular workout. This will allow you to maintain your flexibility.

If you enjoy sports, you may consider games that can be played by wheelchair users such as basketball, volleyball and tennis. It must be pointed out that focus and positive outlook are very important. Each of your sessions must be planned carefully. This will allow you to save time and make decisions on the exercises that you will do in advance. It is recommended that you perform activities that are enjoyable to you personally.

An aspect of exercise that must always be stressed out is its significance in keeping good emotional health. Disabled people may feel depressed, confused, frustrated and angry just like everybody else. Regular work out routines helps in fighting such negative moods.

A note of warning: if you have not been active physically for some time, try having a transitional plan that will strengthen your main muscle groups as well as increase your range of movement. This can be done through stretching exercises. There must be a day of rest between sessions and you should not concentrate on the same group of muscles for two consecutive workouts. Try doing a minimum of three workouts each week. In addition, you should always warm up before your work out routines and perform gentle stretches to cool down afterwards.

Cannes film festival curtain up with comedy, chaos

CANNES, France (Reuters) – Comedy will dominate the opening of the Cannes film festival on Wednesday, with Wes Anderson‘s child fantasy “Moonrise Kingdom” in a tussle with Sacha Baron Cohen‘s anarchic alter ego General Aladeen for the attention of the world’s media.

Thousands of journalists and movie executives are in the glamorous Riviera resort for 12 hectic days of screenings, red carpets, parties and dealmaking, and the first day is typical of the diary clashes they face.

Anderson’s film, starring Bruce Willis and Bill Murray, is the official opening entry in the main competition, ensuring a splashy launch with a press screening, news briefing, interviews and red carpet gala premiere on Wednesday evening.

Yet just a short stroll away along the famous palm-lined Croisette waterfront, Baron Cohen will also be muscling in on the action with a press conference of his own at the swanky Carlton Hotel to promote his latest picture “The Dictator”.

Judging by his outrageous sense of humor and eye for the theatrical, the British comic may steal much of the limelight as he adopts the character of Aladeen, a cruel North African dictator partly inspired by the Arab Spring uprisings.

Amid the pranks and late night parties, however, there is plenty of hard work to be done, with a giant marketplace showcasing hundreds of films and hoping to defy the economic gloom across much of Europe with a spate of sales.

“The economic situation in Europe is not great, but does it mean that we have to forget the dream?” said Thierry Fremaux, general delegate of the festival. “The (economic) crisis is not the crisis of this year,” he told Reuters.

“It has been five years that we are in crisis here in Europe,” he added, speaking in English. “But we have to manage a way to give the people dreams and to say that even in the 1930s after the big crisis, cinema was in very good shape.”

RISING STARS IN SPOTLIGHT

Along the Croisette, last-minute preparations were underway on Tuesday as beach pavilions stocked up with champagne and lobster, promotional posters went up and stages were erected.

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman are among established Hollywood names expected to grace the red carpet, where they will be joined by a long list of rising stars hoping to make their mark.

Cannes, as the world’s biggest and most glamorous film festival, is an ideal platform for a movie and its cast. Silent hit “The Artist”, which went on to sweep the Oscars, launched here last year.

But notoriously picky critics can also make life awkward for directors and actors, as with the 2006 world premiere of “The Da Vinci Code” which received poor reviews.

While grumpy cinephiles is an integral part of Cannes, organizers will be keen to avoid a repeat of last year when maverick director Lars Von Trier was controversially expelled for making jokes about Nazis at a press conference.

This year, the festival has come under fire for not including a single female director in its main competition lineup after four were selected in 2011. It has defended its decision, saying it would not impose a “quota policy”.

Despite the row, media reaction to this year’s lineup has been generally positive.

In the main competition of 22 films, Brazilian director Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel “On the Road” has generated plenty of buzz, not least because “Twilight” actress Kristen Stewart takes on a leading role.

Best known as Bella Swan from the vampire blockbusters, the 22-year-old American will be joined on the sun-kissed French Riviera by Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson.

The British actor appears in another competition movie “Cosmopolis”, directed by Canada’s David Cronenberg, a topical tale of corporate greed that follows a successful New York financier whose world disintegrates around him.

John Hillcoat’s movie “Lawless”, a Depression-era gangster tale, features Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Shia LaBeouf and Mia Wasikowska among others, underlining the importance of fresh acting talent at this year’s festival.

Previous winners of the coveted Palme d’Or prize for best film who are in contention again are Austria’s Michael Haneke with “Amour” (Love), Iran’s Abbas Kiarostami (“Like Someone In Love”), Briton Ken Loach (“The Angels’ Share”) and Romanian Cristian Mungiu (“Beyond the Hills”).

Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey and Kidman all star in Lee Daniels’ “The Paperboy” and Pitt appears in Andrew Dominik’s “Killing Them Softly”.

Hot topics on the big screen include the Arab uprisings, with Egyptian director Yousry Nasrallah’s “After the Battle” in competition, and the pitfalls of celebrity culture in “Antiviral”, the debut feature from Cronenberg’s son Brandon.
